wirecation:Just perusing Youtube and this game from the last year at Wilderspool in 2003 came up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd7hWStMpLc which i mentioned on another thread ages ago when we were talking about old games. Only down side is the awful biased commentary as it's a Saints club video. Watch out for Fozzard taking somebody out at about 101.20 minutes in!A 30 all draw against Saints. I was at this game and i really enjoyed that year under Cullen as we were underdogs in most games. We pushed quite a few big teams that year at Wilderspool. IIRC we lost narrowly to Bradford and Wigan. And the team had plenty of journeyman/average players that started to play well for each other but there are very little highlight videos from that season on Youtube like the wins we had against Widnes etc. 2003 was an enjoyable season. Expectations were low after nearly getting relegated the year before. It's the last year we'd ever regard just getting to the playoffs as a successful season. Felt like the team was together and the fans were behind them. We played some good rugby that season and there were 'characters' in the team who the fans liked...Nat Wood, Briers, Domic, Appo, Burns, Fozzard was popular before he went to Saints, Grose. Even some of the lesser heralded players like Guisset, Smyth, Hilton and Wainwright seemed to connect with fans more than the current players do. That was also the last time the Wire-Widnes derbies were fought between two equal teams and that rivalry was a good part of the season. I remember Cullen saying the goal for the year was to "leave Wilderspool with dignity" and we did. We had about 4 "last ever" games at Wilderspool, but that final league game against Wakefield was a superb day, one of the most memorable games of my life as a Wire fan. The next year we started to get "big time" ambitions, moving to the HJ, then Simon Moran taking us over, signing Fa'afili and Gleeson, the ambition and excitement around the club went up but along with that came the frustration of underachievement when in 2003 it felt like we were happy with what we had done.

Leeds away when we beat them 54-16 think it was 86 season I may be wrong..but what a joy to see Mark Roberts in full flow..if it's on you tube sit back enjoy then compare it to the modern game... RL porn, that game.A mate of mine (and sporadic poster on here), had it on VHS. I remember a Yarkshire commentator saying it was one of the best team performances in ANY sport he'd ever seen....praise indeed. Think Bishop only converted about 3 of the tries as well or would have been a real cricket score. The Kangaroos were touring around then and we didn't get a game; that would have been some battle. Yep 12 tries and 3 conversions! https://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/seasons/championship-1986/week-12/leeds-vs-warrington/summary.html

I may be old and out of touch but I genuinely believe the game was more exciting to watch back then. Some great skills and no shortage of biff and villains. Widnes 4 – 35 Warrington Saturday, 27th December, 1986 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD9z12CXSdY&ab_channel=WarringtonRugbyLeagueLegends

| The Speculator:Or thane:Also (how could i forget) Joey Johns in 2005 as well I was just wondering who was left out of the side to accommodate Joey - so I checked! Turns out we moved Nathan Wood to hooker, with Mark Gleeson dropping to the bench. Jon Clarke was playing loose forward at the time. We played 29 games that season and had four ever-presents: Jon Clarke, Henry Fa'afili, Brent Grose and (perhaps surprisingly) Danny Lima. I THINK we showed Graham Appo the door, to accommodate Johns' overseas spot

Totally agree the game was far better back then...imagine Boyd and Sorensen if they played now..they'd miss 80% of the season due to lengthy bans
