| I posted this some time again about how I liked him playing on the wing. Big, Powerful, pacey, and solid defensively. Yes his raw but his natural ability is frightening. With the rigtht development he could be Wigans very own Vatuvai

There's a scouser I knew who did 378 metres and skipped bail 7 times.

He's always been a consistently good metre maker, mostly because of his direct kick returns that are probably better than most wingers in Super League. It should probably be pointed out that the clean breaks make a big difference to the number of metres made.
Thornley's stats of 135 metres from just 10 carries are arguably even more impressive.

| How many of those clean breaks led to tries?
He's still raw and some of the things he gets criticised for should be sorted out with experience, however the thing I have a problem with in regards to Gelling is his finishing. He runs it hard, straight and aggressive when taking the ball in to give the forwards a rest, which is why his metre stats are generally one of the best in most games, but give him open space or the try line at his mercy and his doesn't back himself in the same way.

That's always been Gelling's issue. There is no better winger for helping the forwards out with metres and no better winger at making metres returning the ball from kicks because he's running the ball back direct. He also does plenty of hard work up the middle too. That part of his game needs no improvement and is one of the reasons why he's a good player to have on the wing.
The more traditional aspects of wing play he does seem to struggle with. His pace is decent but not great for a winger, his positional sense isn't great and his decision making can be very poor.
He's certainly the anti-Pryce; all heart and commitment but better in his own half than in the oppositions.
If he sorts out those attacking issues he'd be one of the best wingers in Super League so it's not hard to see why Wane persists with him on the wing but there does seem to be a lot of work for him to do. He does need to solve those issues if he's going to be a long term winger as you can't keep hoping that the team scores enough to make any chances that he wastes irrelevant.

| He's good at making meter's on the wing but the amount of tries he bombs shows he's out of position and with out bagging him to much I don't see him being a creative or having that killer pass a centre needs. I believe his future lies in the second row especially with Thornley almost certain to be Carmont's replacement.

| If you put a second rower on the wing if hes not getting the most metres gained then there is something wrong.
However I am not knocking the lad, he is very raw, there is potential in him lets just hope he fulfills it.

| As others have said he has all the tools but lacks the fundamentals but thankfully those can be coached.
His read in defence for the first try was woeful, and with open ground in front of him he seemed reluctant to make the most of it. It would be interesting to see how he went in the pack but he is doing a job on the wing long term though I think he needs to be at centre.
