| That’s it. Most SL and NRL wingers can do both - the lads who can do one or the other really well play in the Championship. Look across the top English wingers - Marshall, Johnstone, Makinson, Swift, Ashton - and they all make huge metres out their own end, and can pull off finishes with hardly any space.
It’s clear the reason we signed Walmsley on a short contract was to see if he could stack on some muscle and improve the physical side of his game. And in fairness, he really has. He’s making far more metres now than he was at the beginning of the season, and you can see he’s been working on finding his front instead of battling. As someone with firsthand experience of this, if you’re lanky with exposed ribs and long levers you’re very easy to whack and get driven back.
We all know if Walmsley was British or French, he’d be staying. But if we can use his quota spot to sign someone else of Tyson Smoothy’s quality, and either sign a top winger or get Tchamambe ready, then we should.

With Atoni signing for Cas, I’d go for Owen Trout from Leigh to bolster the front row. He’s got size, youth, brings loads of energy and wouldn’t take up a quota spot. I’m not saying we’d get him but he’s a Wakefield lad and fan. In his short career to date he’s been at Cas and Leeds as a junior, then Huddersfield and now Leigh so he’s obviously not worried about moving from one club to the next.
I thought he was at Wakefield as a junior, when his brother was with us. He played at Stanley Rangers, same as his brother, but I don't remember him joining our Academy tbh. I remember him playing for England Academy against the Aussies when at Leeds, when England won 2-0. Came through Leeds academy I believe. Yeah, as I said, I remember him playing for England Academy against the Aussies while a Leeds junior. I seem to remember quite a bit of hype about him when he was going through their Academy at that time, but he only lasted a year in their senior set-up before moving to Hudds, might have been down to the lack of chances he was getting. I also think he made his SL debut against Trinity for Leeds.

He'd be a good shout and seems to be coming into his prime, it also leaves that space open to look for someone that suits us from the NRL. But hasn't Trout still got another year on his contract for Leigh? He signed for 3 years for the 2024 season, so that takes us till the end of 2026 season. Not saying we couldn't move for him, but we'd have to pay a fee. For some reason, this disappeared, which was my reply when Avenger suggested him.
